Yes, the patients have special abilities. If your special ability is something that would help you escape in a few seconds, then you can be sure that there are precautions against it (there are protections against the walls to prevent people who can walk through walls from escaping; shapeshifters are marked with a tattoo that won't disappear with shifting; etc etc).
Staff positions include but are not limited to nurses, doctors, scientists, janitors, security guards... anybody who interacts with the patients.

Description: She's a slightly chubby, petite blond, weighing in at 135 pounds and 5'2". Her medium-length hair is styled in a boring way and is usually falling into her gray eyes, as she stares at the floor a lot. She likes to wear sandals or go barefoot around the facility, and has a lot of shirts that would be more appropriate for preteens (the design, not the size). She's not ugly, but she has the uncanny ability for people to tell her that she's 'not their type.' Her room is painted a light blue and she has a huge bookshelf, filled with books that she's read repeatedly.
Personality: She seems childish for her age, or at least shy and cautious about talking to people. She's self-conscious about her looks and doesn't speak often. Megan spends a lot of her time looking out the windows through the bars.
Special ability: To make things float. It's not quite telekinesis, since she can't control where they go. Megan can just... turn gravity off.
History: Megan used to live in a rural area in Missouri. At the age of 10, her powers began to manifest, which gained the attention of the asylum. She's been there now for 7 years after an incident involving a herd of cows and a few angry villagers. Megan doesn't like to talk about the incident or what happened in the two years between when she got her powers and when she was taken away from the Asylum. All she says is that, for the most part, she prefers it here. She knows all of the staff on a first-name basis, which is saying something for someone as shy as she. She has a few friends but prefers to stay in her room, where she writes down quotes she attributes to other people but are really things she thought up.

Description: A pretty blond with long legs and thin frame. Grey eyes, usually wears jeans and a tank top.
Personality: Energetic and has a sunny disposition, but a strange fixation with pain. Specifically other people's pain.
Special ability: She can create an electric charge with her body and shoot it at people. From practicing at the Institution, she's learned to control the charge, so she can create anything from a little static shock to essentially a lightning storm. However, she cannot use her ability when she's wet, or she's liable to shock herself.
History: Lived a normal life as an upper middle class American in a suburb. Discovered her ability when she got in a petty squabble at school with another girl. Her parents, having no idea how to deal with this problem themselves, sent her to the Institution, which was still relatively new at the time.

Description: Deep red hair, almost maroon, kept very orderly whether it’s in a bun, ponytail, or just let down. Even her makeup is immaculate. Her eyes are a misty blue. Madison’s tragically beautiful: she resembles a 1920’s starlet. Usually, she wears nurse’s uniforms or something classy. Madison's been at the Asylum for a while now, several years. It's estimated that she wound up here at about the age of 22.
Personality: Very nurturing and gentle. She’s the type of person someone would come to with their problems. She knows pretty much everything about everyone here in the institution: staff and inmates alike. She thinks that she's actually a nurse at the institution, even though she's actually an inmate. Madison is allowed more freedom with things due to her cooperation, and that they let her help on minor procedures to keep her calm (officially; unofficially it's because they would like the help).
Special ability: psychometrics. Simply put: she can pick up psychic impressions left by others. Madison can pick up on a history or trace of someone’s thoughts, feelings, etc. She would know who was there, what they were thinking, even what they were/are like. Madison has the ability of empathy and can dull someone’s pain.
History: Madison would prefer her past to stay in the past. But the short version: she was once a nurse and sensed some psychic impressions of several patients in comas, which led her to pull the plugs on their life support systems. She’s not a killer, at least she doesn’t feel that she is, but Madison just felt she was carrying out the wishes of the patients.

Age: 21
Description: He has red hair that always seems to stand on end, though he insists that there is no product in it. He has bright green eyes that seem large on his face, and crinkle slightly when he smiles. Alex is strangely clear of freckles anywhere on his lean body. He also has large scars on his face and body at random intervals, like he got in a knife fight with a kitchen of chefs and lost.
Personality: Alex is very upbeat and cocky, and likes to talk with people. He doesn't like it when people don't like him but will stick up for what's right, blah blah. Doesn't mean he's not selfish and will consider the consequences, but 9 times out of 10 he'll disregard them. He's no stranger to pain.
Special ability: Alex's blood is acidic, meaning it will burn anything that isn't glass; in this case, the doctors have to be careful if collecting samples of his blood. Luckily, he clots fast. His own body is obviously immune, and the rest of his bodily fluids are normal (spit, erm... et cetera). The orderlies don't consider him in danger, as he would die of blood loss while getting through just one steel door.
History: He didn't know of his "problem" until he was 19, when in a bad accident in the kitchen his roommates found out that he dissolved whatever they tried to press against his wound to stop it from bleeding. When he came through it alright, Alex used his winning personality to convince them to keep quiet, but his own curiosity revealed him. That got him into trouble just before his 21st birthday, which accounts for over half of the scars on his body, as he got into a brawl in his downtown area with people who regarded him as a freak. He spent his birthday in the Asylum recovering from the wounds and has been there 5 months now. He's just gotten to the point that they wounds are just scar tissue now. He doesn't mind them, seeing as how he already had a few nasty scars before then, with one accident or another, so a few dozen more don't matter.
How long they've been at the asylum: 5 months. 4 and a half of those months he was kept away from the other patients until his scar tissue formed so as to not unduly scare the other patients, so he unofficially arrived only a few weeks ago.

Name: Sarah Manifest
Age: 14
Description: Very thin, albino and sickly looking, with white hair that is kept cut close to her scalp. Her large eyes, when opened, are a pale lavender.
Personality: Doesn't speak coherently very often, instead babbles or speaks in riddles. Very closed off, quiet, generally very gentle. Though she moves about (and she usually floats, doesn't walk), it is as though she were in a coma, for she doesn't react to her environment. She must be fed and watered intravenously, and babied overall. She seems to like small animals and Kelly Jackson, since Sarah will float after Kelly and hum happy tunes when Kelly enters the room. She seems to especially like fellow patient Madison LeCoeur, since she actually smiles when near Madison and gifts her with candies. Nobody can seem to figure out where she gets the candies. Sarah sleeps for exactly thirty-three hours every twelve days, and cannot be approached during that time, since staff who've entered her room during her sleep cycle develop severe paranoia, ridiculous phobias, extreme insomnia, gruesome hallucinations and hear threatening voices, and eventually end up killing themselves. Therefore, Sarah's room is locked down during her sleep cycle. Physical contact with Sarah when she is awake results in feelings of calm, safety, and happiness. Odd things happen around Sarah. She is kept on "happy pills" and relaxants to keep her in a good mood.
Special ability: Telekinesis, telepathy, has an "aura" of mental energy that affects most anything near her. For example, a bowl of fruit near her may cease to obey the laws of gravity for a few minutes, or a window may shatter and come back together again. And depending on whether she feels safe or threatened, this aura can affect the thoughts and feelings of people nearby, negatively or positively. And vice-versely, other peoples moods will affect how Sarah feels.
History: Sarah was brought to the asylum when she was eight. Up until then, she was the youngest of three children in a lower middle-class family in Southern California. Her entire family was killed in a car accident in which her car hit a Semi Truck that ran a red light, and the was crushed by another semi tailgating close behind. Her entire family was killed, and Sarah fractured her skull after being thrown out the windshield. She was transferred from the hospital she was in to the asylum after three nurses were killed, one having gouged her own eyes out with a popsicle stick before jumping through the 12th story window. The other two had seizures and died of heart failure.

Description: 5’6”, brown eyes, bright pink hair w/ a massive amount of roots showing because it’s difficult to get dye snuck in.
Personality: Generally a nice, friendly person. Her power has never caused her any major harm, but she’s grown bitter toward the Institution—- she’s seen nothing else since graduating high school three years ago.
Special ability: Magnetism—- metal stuff is attracted to her. She can control it to some degree, but can’t really turn it off. Also, she can’t do the Magneto thing that’s basically telekinesis. Yet.
History: Amber led a fairly normal life until the tail end of her senior year of high school, when she started sticking to lockers and attracting paper clips from across the room. This seemed like something she’d want fixed before going off to college and figuring out the more crucial things in life like careers and boys and such. Once she realized that the Institution wasn’t going to cure her anytime in the foreseeable future, and that it was more of a prison than a treatment center, it was too late.
After three years of confinement, Amber is bitter toward the institution. She’s missed out on too many things. She wants her freedom.

Description: Tall, black hair and green eyes. Build is muscular, but not especially strong. Caucasion but tan due to many hours at the beach.
Personality: Cocky as hell, usually gets Lucas into much trouble. Arrogant, but has a soft spot for very cute girls in trouble. Lucas is neither good or bad, but looks after himself, and decides what to do according to what would be in his benefit.
Special ability: Can read minds but only when there is eye contact.
History: Lucas became a millionaire by winning at a high stakes poker game, with a continuing "lucky" streak after discovering his special ability. But soon he found he couldn't control his power, and became overwhelmed with the thoughts of everyone he looked at, so he checked himself into the Institution. Now that he has gained better control, he wants to leave but the Institution told him that it's still not safe, and recently Lucas is beginning to suspect that they aren't telling him everything.

Age: 13
Description: She has wavy brown hair down to her waist and a set of deep brown eyes that seems to change in tint and shade according to the individual that she displays. Lainey is rather small for her age, and at first glance she could be mistaken for a porcelain doll (mostly due to her pale skin and apparent fondness of lacy dresses).
Personality: Lainey’s real personality is not clear, since she exhibits an incredibly wide spectrum of characteristic
s due to her ability, or as some others would say, her illness. As a default though, she seems to be an ordinary 13 year old girl when she’s at her normal stage, even though she is aware of her other personalities. She doesn’t suffer from any period of memory loss, but she has no control over her actions at times.
Special ability: No one is sure if her split personality is a result of being possessed by ghosts, past reincarnations, a divided soul, or simply figment of her imagination. However, she knows things that she couldn’t possibly have learned herself, and can usually consciously call upon a personality that would be to the best of her advantage in a given situation. Even though she can choose a trait based on her will, she can’t prevent one from taking over.
History: Adopted at age 7 from an orphanage and abandoned at the asylum at age 12, Lainey experienced a type of familial love and lost it when her “personality disorder” thoroughly developed. The couple that adopted her was frightened and tried everything from exorcism to medication, but finally broke down under the stress of living with her and not knowing who she was.

Age: 43
Description: Hassan’s appearance has improved since his injections. Once a lizard like feral beast, he’s more human, but not entirely. His teeth are over all subtly pointy and his eyes thin, yellowed with copper irises and small pupils. His brow bones jut ridiculously over his eyes and like the rest of his head, is hairless. The skin around his eyes is dark, a little baggy and his nose long and pointy. His lips are wide, almost too wide and thin with deep lines around them. His bone structure is harsh with strong temples, brows of course, cheeks and chin. His skin is dark with odd copper discolorations here and there and his scalp is oddly textured like it is trying to be scales. His shoulders and chest are broad, the shoulder joints themselves being big and knot like. His hands are clawed, his fingertips also textured. Not to mention he’s like 6’3” and looks like he could rip a couch in half even though he isn’t ripped per say.
Personality: Having lived as a man eating monster for a few years, Hassan is not the most lovable person in the world. He is violent, stubborn, territorial, sneaky, selfish, uncaring, pitiless, resourceful, undeterring, animalistic, vulgar, hostile, antagonistic, have I said anything nice yet?
Special ability: Hassan transforms into monster. At first it was on and off but finally his mind snapped and he just settled as predatory beast. However, since falling into the hands of the asylum, he’s been given injections to suppress his transformation and make him more human.
History: Hassan was a professor from Oman, working in America when he started having odd dreams. What type of odd dreams, you ask? Well. dreams of the monstrous eating people kind. Slowly he began to change, just subtly at first, so he wasn’t sure whether or not his was dreaming. All the while, as his body changed, his mind started slipping, until he couldn’t fight the madness anymore and became the creature permanently. That is until the injections, however, he still isn’t entirely human, and is not at all the man he used to be.

Age: 17
Description: Calen is fairly tall just short of 6'. He has a slender but muscular build weighing in at only 145lbs. His icy blue eyes look as if they stare strait through you with his gaze, and his ebony black hair falls just past his shoulders. He has pale skin and sunken facial features. For security reasons, he has a thick metal-and-leather collar fixed around his neck. It's too sturdy to be taken off by even the strongest person. It has a concealed needle in it, triggered to shoot into his neck and sedate him the moment any guards or personnel become alarmed by his illusions. The sedative works within approximately 2 seconds and continues to work for as long as the needle is in his neck.
Personality: Calen is very timid and shy, yet even through years of abuse and neglect, he still kept his kind heart.
Special ability:Has an uncanny ability to create illusions, of anyone or anything he has seen, or could think up. Even though his illusions are harmless, they can be disturbing, and even traumatizing to others. His illusions can maifest on there own when he is going through a stressful time, or during his disturbing nightmares.
History: Since Calen was born, he has been shifted around from foster parent to foster parent rejected each time because of his abilities and his distant personality. After he turned thirteen he was finally committed because his constant shuffling truamatized him warping his mind.

Name: Zander Rukin
Age: 24
Description: 5’9”, his eyes are long, narrow and his hair is a dark brown all swooshy and hot. He has a long smooth face with a narrow chin. His lips look like they’re from a Greek statue and are prone to smirk and slide about. His nose is straight with a little point at the end and elegant thin nostrils. His eyebrows are thin, expressive and highly flirtatious, and the over all mold of his head is handsome and sleek. He is strong, toned, slim, very flexible and over all way too hot. Geez.
Personality: Zander is somewhat of a sex addict, immodest, perverted, cocky as hell. Not to mention vain, arrogant, smart assed, rude, silver tongued and to a degree rather cruel. Picking on people is a favorite hobby of his. He’s persistent, determined, competitive, a sour loser and an even worse winner. Though if he has to buckle down and get serious he is dependable and relentless.
Special ability: Zander is poisonous. His skin makes people break out in horrid boils almost instantly and his spit is poisonous enough to knock you dead in seconds, leaving your lips sickly blue. Therefore no kissy.
History: Zander is the son of a military general, born into a rich honorable family, which is precisely why his indecent behavior got him disowned. He was brilliant, top of his class, but once he began to associate with shady characters at the military school he was sent to, his already troublesome disposition became down right ruffian like. He neglected his studies even though he was more than capable of passing with flying colors. An affair with a sergeant’s visiting daughter got him expelled, and further flings with men, booze and whores got him tossed out of the family all together. Though his mom, unable to completely stop loving her son, has been slipping him money to fund his lascivious lifestyle. Half heartedly trying to find a job, and earning most of his money from “dance lessons” and his mother, he’s become the most popular member of any party. However subtly since he was 22, he noticed something changing in respects to his effects on people. By 24, he could no longer deny that he was, somehow, completely poisonous. Being a sex addict now rendered unable to touch anyone, he’s been more reckless and obnoxious then usual. One unfortunate incident knocked a woman dead and in horror he went into a state of reclusiveness, that is, until the asylum caught up with him.

Age: 22
Description: A very pretty Egyptian woman. She's not very tall, standing at 5.3, and weighs a healthy 122 lbs. She has shoulder-length, straight-ish black hair, electric blue eyes, and pleasantly tanned skin, though she's gotten a bit pale since being in the institution. She usually has a cold expression on her otherwise attractive face. She keeps her nails painted black and filed to points. She wears knee-high doc martens, calf-length, tight black jeans that hug her feminine but gentle curves, and a snug dark blue t-shirt. She can snarl perfectly.
Personality: Cold, stand-offish, and bitter. Though she is extremely intelligent, she doesn't offer to help anyone with it. She hates men and thinks that all men are idiots, and though she doesn't actually like woman, she will flirt with women from time to time, just to be cruel. She isn't seen often, because she stays in her room most of the time, reading, writing, painting and other things. When she does come out, she doesn't approach anyone. She does, however, seem to like Sarah....but that's because being near Sarah is calming. She also likes to fix things, and loves being around large machinery.
Special ability: She would call it a disability. Her body runs entirely off of electricity...so she doesn't breathe, her heart pumps water rather than blood, and she doesn't eat, though she must drink at least two gallons of water a day. In fact, her entire chest and abdominal cavity is devoid of any internal organs, except for her heart. Rather, her innards have been replaced by a thick, slightly acidic fluid, like battery acid. She must be "recharged" every night, though the amount of electricity needed increases a little every day. She is also immune to most poisons and medications, thanks to her lack of a circulatory system. She cannot discharge electricity.
History: She had a troubled past. Her mother died of a brain tumor when Ea was seven, and her father was withdrawn and physically abusive. She left home at the age of fourteen and lived with various older boyfriends and relatives. She dropped out of school at age fifteen, but continued studying on her own. She made money by pole-dancing (since she looked older and had a fake ID) and selling LSD and esctasy at the dance clubs she frequented. At sixteen, she started taking welding classes at her local college, and during her first project, she made the mistake of setting her hand on the metal between the welding rod and the electrode, thus electrocuting her. However, her body absorbed the electricity rather than hurt her. Ever since then, she stopped craving food but found herself craving electric shocks. She got her welding certification at eighteen years of age and made enough money doing that to quit her other "jobs". While she was wending an oil pipeline in Alaska, someone witnessed her electrocuting herself, and thought she was either suicidal or crazy. So that person reported her to the authorities, who delivered her to the asylum.

Name: Tom
Age: 22
Description: He is six foot, so rather tall, with brown hair that looks just plain unkempt. Tom likes his sunglasses and with them on is convinced he looks like a rockstar-which he does, in the drugged-out, distantly handsome kind of way. He has brown eyes that are oftentimes glazed, with dark rings under them from lack of sleep and exhaustion, so dark as to mimic eyeliner. When Tom isn't giving a crooked smile to random people, he's acting fidgety and staring off into the distance. He is freakishly thin for his height and if one were to take off his shirt, very little muscle mass would be showing. It was better than when he first came here, when Tom looked practically concentration-camp anorexic. He is often listening to music at very high volumes with his large headphones.
Personality: Paranoid, but still hangs out with people, if only to be in a large group and not feel so alone. He finds the oddest things funny and occasionally makes statements that sometimes don't make any sense. Usually, though, if you can get him to explain his transitioning, he can actually connect what he says to the conversation. So basically he acts like a druggie.
Special ability: Tom can alter sound. He can amplify sound or eliminate it, and alter his voice to match those of the people around him, or air-guitar... REALLY well. When he uses his powers, you can see the air in front of the sound source distort, like heat rising from concrete. He only recently realized how to control it, but is still having problems with himself. They've figured out that he probably uses his own energy to alter the kinetic energy of the air molecules, and since he uses his power so often he is always eating but looks almost freakishly thin.
History: Tom was, of course, always the loudest baby in the nursery. He also had quite a musical talent with singing and the guitar at a very early age. Later in life, Tom was checked into a psychiatric ward for trying to kill his flatmate. It turns out several voices had been keeping him up for weeks telling him to kill her for what she had done-which was skip rent for the third month in a row, putting them in danger of being evicted. Tom was diagnosed with a case of schizophrenia and kept in treatments, although the medicine only dulled his habits. After a mild incident with his powers, he was then transferred to the Institute. There, they found out about his ability in more depth, and the fact that his 'voices' were a focus of his power in his inner ear. Tom had actually been hearing auditory voices, not just delusions, but as a function of his subconscious, especially those parts that all people have but most suppress. He still hears the voices but is undergoing massive therapy to deal with his issues. He doesn't get a lot of sleep, as the voices still keep him up, but medication calms him down so he doesn't do what they tell him to do.

Name: Zacheriah Isaac McIlroy (Ry for short)
Age: 19
Description: Ry is tall and almost gangly looking. He's 6'2" and 170 lbs. He is athletic and muscular so it takes the edge of the lankiness. He has pale, pink toned skin with a light (very light compared to his siblings) sprinkling of freckles on his face, shoulders and arms. His eyes are pale green and his hair a dark auburn almost brown color. His hair is almost always unkempt, sometimes overgrown but usually just messy. He's not huge on appearances simply because he doesn't care. If he's comfortable he's happy.
Personality: Regardless of his fresh-out-of-bed look, Ry is good looking; and boy does he know it! He has a fairly broad taste in women and is almost constantly flirting. If it has legs and can do a decent hair flip, Ry is trying to take it out on a date. Though when in a relationship he is completely monogamous. In addition to flirting, Ry enjoys tennis, running and rugby with his brothers and friends. He is very outgoing and enjoys pestering people he perceives to be shy and or introverts.
Special ability: Ry can hypnotize people. To hypnotize a person he must make eye contact and concentrate. Hypnotizing requires little concentration for him but he still has to, he can't just look at some one and put them into a trance. There have been other occasions where he hypnotized several people at once without making eye contact with any of them. To this day he is unsure of how he did it. Many of his former therapists speculate that this is just the tip of Ry's power.
History: Ry grew up on a ranch in Eastern Pennsylvania with his mother, father, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. His family is staunch Irish Catholic. He and his siblings attend a sixth through twelfth grade boarding school. The out-of-state experience made he and his siblings a little less staunch in their Catholic beliefs. It was in late eighth grade that his powers started to manifest. For three years it was a well kept secret and game between Ry and his 2 older brothers, Ben and Iz. In the eleventh grade he started having problems controlling it and one way or another he ended up in court with a lawsuit against him. He was found not guilty; but his mother (unsettled by what happened) yanked him out of school, home schooled him for the next two years all the while sending him to countless therapists, hypnotherapists, and priests. The Institution was a last resort.

Description: She has wispy brown hair pulled back into a tight bun, which many strands escaping and forming thin bangs. She has business-like glasses over narrow green eyes and is routinely seen in a lab jacket over a few scrubs. She's quite pretty but doesn't smile enough to make her inviting or anybody safe to hit on. She's pretty tall, almost six feet, and is lean and muscular, with a body definition that makes her stand out as someone who has a black belt in jujitsu.
Personality: She can be coldly brisk when she's nervous, in a hurry, or angry. Around the patients she likes, though, Kelly can warm up and be almost sociable. However, she does draw the line between patient and friend rather sharply, knowing what happens to those in the asylum and preferring to not associate with them personally, not more than necessary.
Job position: Nurse, usually socializing the inmates (also known as taking data on their condition), patrolling the area, or giving out drugs and IV's when necessary.
History: Kelly has worked in asylums on internships for quite a while, graduating with honors as a nurse and working closely with psychologists. Her experience with asylums and martial arts made her more than qualified for this job position. She accepted as a professional, but became personally intrigued in the people here. She's currently conducting research on the side of the effects of such an unusual situation on the minds of the patients. Of course, she could get fired for this, but she keeps her research hidden in her room, and it's more or less just notes of her experiences... nothing extremely incriminating unless they were looking to fire her anyway. With her ability to defend herself if things got hairy she associates with the patients a lot more than most of the other staff, although she has orders to let the trained guards take over immediately if at all possible.

Personality: Doesn't like the patients. In fact, doesn't understand why they need to conduct these experiements on them. He believes the world would be better without these people, and doesn't mind letting the patients know it.
Job position: A nurse, does the basic routine, checking on the patients, administering drugs. He's the one called in to quell any "issues" when they arise.
History: Went to med school to train to be a surgeon, but was unable to afford all of the fees. He picked up this job as a way to make some extra cash, but it soon replaced his schooling as well.
